First day of class

The first day of school is always one that gets me nervous and excited, but this one so much more because it is the last first year of school for me. It is a bittersweet feeling, but I'm glad that it is one full of education classes. I was very excited when I added this course because I knew it would be an experience I wouldn't forget and one that would help me in the future. My goal for this class is to work on new ways to present science to a classroom of kids who may not be interested in the subject. I did not enjoy science in school at all but it was because of the way it was presented.

I am not sure how many people will recognize this, but this is how I learned about science. My teachers would write the notes on this and the class would write them in our Science notebook. This was the worst class ever! This is how I was taught science from grade school through high school. I remember very little hands on science activities and projects.

Another goal I have for this class is to start enjoying science again, so I can show that in my teaching. It is hard to teach something that you don't enjoy. I want to want to teach this subject and be excited about it.

In class we did an interesting project which left me thinking about the stereotypical scientist, and how children get this stereotype. Most of the pictures were of men with crazy hair. They also were standing behind a table with beakers and other typical science items. Most of the scientists were Doctors and this I found to be expected but they don't have to be. I can see how many children believe that scientists have to be Doctors. but I would like to get this image out of their minds. They could be a scientist and not have to get their doctorate.




The new tool I got to use to introduce myself to the class is called Word Art, and it is an Apple tool. I will have to use my I-Pad to design my word art which I hope it is easy to use. I am excited to be using a new type of technology to introduce myself to the class, and I will be excited to share my experience with the tool. I can't wait to show the class how to use the tool, and how beneficial it could be for the classroom.
